Thompsons, the UK’s market – leading tipper bodybuilder, is pleased to confirm a wide range of new appointments, the most significant of which being key staff positions at its factory at Kirkliston near Edinburgh.

David Penman is now appointed General Manager at the site, and is therefore responsible for all Thompsons’ activities north of the border. To support him directly with new tipper sales, Angus McIntosh joins the company as Sales Manager Scotland. Of particular benefit to both Thompsons and its customers, Angus is already very well known in the Scottish truck scene, having previously worked for over 27 years in various manufacturer dealerships.

Further strengthening Thompsons Scottish team is Stewart Dick, who takes on the important role of production co-ordinator to help the factory run as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Further appointments have been made at the Group level. Neil Griffin is appointed Engineering Director responsible for all design, technical and engineering issues across both Thompsons and its sister company Charlton, where Andrew Gunn has also been made Sales Director. Another Group appointment is that of Megan Williams who, whilst being predominately based in Blackburn, takes on the role of Group Human Resources Manager.

In recent years the Group has directed considerable resources to fund its expansion, much of which has been focused on its Blackburn sites. Taking advantage of both a readily available pool of skilled labour already familiar with building commercial vehicles as well as a high volume local truck marketplace, Thompsons’ Blackburn operation now builds more tippers than Croydon. Significantly, Thompsons has also established a resident design and engineering facility at its Blackburn site, headed up by Mark Kirvan.

Thompsons preferred policy of ‘promotion from within’ now sees James Sanderson promoted to Production Manager at Blackburn Site 2, following the earlier elevation of Arthur Wright to the equivalent role at Site 1.

Also at Blackburn, Kevin Kelly joins the highly successful Thompsons eParts operation, whilst Matthew Shields takes on responsibility for all Site 4’s higher technology and automation processes.

Commenting on all the recent changes, Joint Managing Director Simon Shields says:

“As for all businesses in our industry, 2020 has proved to be an incredibly difficult and challenging year. However, it’s also given us the opportunity to really look at how we want to see Thompsons grow into the future and how to further strengthen our team. These recent appointments add real depth to our human resource.

In particular, we are delighted to have a strong and well – focused team in Scotland, which is sure to continue the significant advances Thompsons is already making in that marketplace.”

Thompsons rocks at Harrogate with a record 30-plus trucks at TIP-Ex!

Wednesday, 14th June 2017

With over 30 trucks on display, the Thompsons Group made its biggest ever splash at the 2017 TIP-Ex Show, confirming the company as by far and away the UK’s top tipper bodybuilder.

But what stood out this year was not just the number of trucks that Thompsons and Charlton brought to Harrogate, but also their variety.

Highlights included a new super – heavy duty body for Scottish operator Yuill & Dodds. Called Rockmaster, this body features upper and lower steel floors sandwiching a 25mm hardwood inner. Built for transporting 10 tonnes rocks on sea defence work, this body is truly an ‘ultimate’!

Also in prominent position was one of the ten new Loadmaster Lite tippers going to Durham – based Hargreaves Services plc. Long – standing Thompsons customer LC Vehicle Hire of Leeds was also highly prominent with a large number of trucks celebrating their 60th birthday.

Charlton bodied trucks were also out in force, most notably with an 8×4 Tridem tipper grab destined for Hart’s Haulage in far away Cornwall, and a 6×2 DAF with a dropside BuildLite builder’s merchant body and rear mounted crane destined for Parker Building Supplies of East Sussex. Also on the Tridem theme was a Renault 8×4 with Hyva hookloader bodywork – quite possibly the first Tridem / hookloader combination in the UK – supplied and fitted by Thompsons in Blackburn.

Products aside, TIP-Ex also saw Thompsons formally launch its new ServiceTech aftersales programme to the industry, with many visitors also being keen to find out more about the forthcoming new factory in Scotland.

All of which continues to make 2017 another really key year for our company!

More of everything from Thompsons at TIP-Ex

Wednesday, 17th May 2017

With at least 25 tippers coming to the Show, the market – leading Thompsons Group is set to deliver another tip – top performance in Harrogate.

But this year the story for Thompsons isn’t just about the number of its trucks on display as there are also significant company developments for everyone to talk about too.

Most significant of these is the recently announced decision to build a factory in Scotland which will inevitably secure Thompsons a leading position north of the border. Yet perhaps of even more importance to tipper operators right across the UK is the TIP-Ex launch of ServiceTech, Thompsons’ new and greatly enhanced service, parts and engineering facility.

These latest developments show how Thompsons is further cementing its ‘top slot’ position in UK tipper bodybuilding to provide itself with an even stronger business base in the future.

For visitors to Harrogate though, it’s the trucks themselves that give real and obvious evidence to Thompsons’ overall market leadership. On the company’s main stand in Hall A, a super – heavy duty tipper body going to Yuill & Dodds of Hamilton has been built with a sandwich floor comprising a 5mm Hardox bottom plate, then a 25mm hardwood inner section, both being topped off with an 8mm upper floor. Designed for carrying individual rocks weighing up to 10 tonnes apiece, this truck is but one example of a much larger order from this major Scottish operator for numerous tippers employing multiple Thompsons bodytypes.

Also on Thompsons inside stand is a Loadmaster Lite body on a Volvo FMX, one of 10 such examples destined for Durham – based Hargreaves Services plc. For many years the UK’s top selling tipper body, operators everywhere find that Loadmaster Lite’s rugged, single skinned Hardox design strikes the ideal balance between generous payload capacity and long term reliability and durability.

Among other Thompsons exhibits in evidence throughout the Show are no less than six vehicles for LC Vehicle Hire of Leeds including Loadmaster tipper grabs, 7.5 tonners with Roadmaster dropside bodies and a Hyva hookloader (fitted and supplied to LC by Thompsons ServiceTech in Blackburn). Outside the halls there’s also a further example of Thompsons’ recently – launched Paymaster steel tipping trailer.

Thompsons sister company Charlton’s exhibits include some interesting trucks too.

At least eight Charlton vehicles will be on display, including a GrabLite body and crane mounted to a Volvo Tridem tipper destined for Hart’s Haulage in far – away Cornwall, plus another GrabLite destined for Derbyshire – based Brid’s.

Across the UK, Charlton’s single – skinned steel SuperLite is now more popular than ever, as evidenced by SRC Aggregates of Essex bringing two to the Show with other examples coming from The Ardula Group of Maidstone, Manchester based PP O’Connor, GF Gordon (Plant Hire) of South Ockendon and Cook & Son of Gatwick.

Also from Charlton, and making a debut for an entirely new vehicle type for TIP-Ex, isa 6×2 rigid fitted with a dropside builder’s merchant body and crane, this truck soon to enter service with Parker Building Supplies of Polegate, East Sussex.

Yet more Thompsons Group products can be found being exhibited by various truck manufacturer and tipping equipment suppliers, these including Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Dennis Eagle (with a new low entry 8×4 tipper), Edbro and Binotto.

As Thompsons director Simon Shields says:

“TIP-Ex is the shop window for the whole industry, so we put our maximum effort into it. Every year, we think ‘beat that’ – but somehow, thanks to our customers and suppliers really wanting to work with us to show all their latest trucks, we always do.

This year, we have more to offer visitors than ever.”
