Thompsons makes a key fleet breakthrough – with Thompsons!

Latest News | 21st Jun

Thompsons, the UK’s leading tipper bodybuilder, has just achieved a major breakthrough with one of northern England’s major tipper operators – Thompsons of Prudhoe.

Two new FMXs with all – steel Loadmaster Lite bodies have just entered service with the Northumbria based company this week. Running some 80 eight wheelers, this is the first time Thompsons of Prudhoe has chosen its namesake bodywork.

“We are always looking to improve our tipper fleet specifications” says Transport Manager Ronnie McGrouther, adding “and these days it’s pretty hard to avoid Thompsons’ reputation for building tipper bodies that are exceptionally strong, durable and long lasting. We buy trucks to run and keep in the long term, not just the first three years when most things are covered by warranty. Actually choosing the Loadmaster Lite model as the optimum body for our new Volvos wasn’t that difficult – it has a totally proven reputation whilst still offering a very acceptable payload potential.”

A true multi-purpose body design, Loadmaster Lite delivers the greatest possible operating versatility, being equally capable at handling everything from sand and gravel quarry work right through to muckaway and demolition. As one of the north east’s most successful tipper businesses, Thompsons Prudhoe’s tippers have to handle precisely such a full range of work, and with the maximum possible productivity.

Specified with heavy duty 5mm Hardox floors, higher than standard 1.225m single piece sides, electric sheeting and cab operated Auto-Loc tailgates, the new 410hp sleeper cabbed FMXs tare off at an impressive 13,270kgs, affording an easy 18,500kgs carrying capacity.

“In the old days, our new tipper chassis were usually fitted with alloy bodies” adds Ronnie McGrouther, “and when these wore out and the trucks got older we’d fit them with steel bodies made by ourselves as they’d spend the rest of their working lives on heavy duty work such as site clearance and demolition. Of course, we can’t do that now, so more and more we’re looking for trucks that give us the best possible versatility, durability and longevity – all in a single package.

We have great hopes for the Loadmaster / FMX combination, if only because we know it’s already a highly successful package for other operators all around the UK.”

Speaking for Thompsons in Blackburn, Director Simon Shields is naturally delighted to have broken into one of the north’s most prestigious tipper fleets, commenting “Thompsons of Prudhoe is a company with a solid, fully proven reputation for excellence in everything it does, making it a genuine role model for our industry. We are naturally thrilled to have supplied our first two tipper bodies to them, and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship into the future.”

Thompsons and Thompsons? A natural fit, for sure.
