More of everything from Thompsons at TIP-Ex

Latest News | 17th May

With at least 25 tippers coming to the Show, the market – leading Thompsons Group is set to deliver another tip – top performance in Harrogate.

But this year the story for Thompsons isn’t just about the number of its trucks on display as there are also significant company developments for everyone to talk about too.

Most significant of these is the recently announced decision to build a factory in Scotland which will inevitably secure Thompsons a leading position north of the border. Yet perhaps of even more importance to tipper operators right across the UK is the TIP-Ex launch of ServiceTech, Thompsons’ new and greatly enhanced service, parts and engineering facility.

These latest developments show how Thompsons is further cementing its ‘top slot’ position in UK tipper bodybuilding to provide itself with an even stronger business base in the future.

For visitors to Harrogate though, it’s the trucks themselves that give real and obvious evidence to Thompsons’ overall market leadership. On the company’s main stand in Hall A, a super – heavy duty tipper body going to Yuill & Dodds of Hamilton has been built with a sandwich floor comprising a 5mm Hardox bottom plate, then a 25mm hardwood inner section, both being topped off with an 8mm upper floor. Designed for carrying individual rocks weighing up to 10 tonnes apiece, this truck is but one example of a much larger order from this major Scottish operator for numerous tippers employing multiple Thompsons bodytypes.

Also on Thompsons inside stand is a Loadmaster Lite body on a Volvo FMX, one of 10 such examples destined for Durham – based Hargreaves Services plc. For many years the UK’s top selling tipper body, operators everywhere find that Loadmaster Lite’s rugged, single skinned Hardox design strikes the ideal balance between generous payload capacity and long term reliability and durability.

Among other Thompsons exhibits in evidence throughout the Show are no less than six vehicles for LC Vehicle Hire of Leeds including Loadmaster tipper grabs, 7.5 tonners with Roadmaster dropside bodies and a Hyva hookloader (fitted and supplied to LC by Thompsons ServiceTech in Blackburn). Outside the halls there’s also a further example of Thompsons’ recently – launched Paymaster steel tipping trailer.

Thompsons sister company Charlton’s exhibits include some interesting trucks too.

At least eight Charlton vehicles will be on display, including a GrabLite body and crane mounted to a Volvo Tridem tipper destined for Hart’s Haulage in far – away Cornwall, plus another GrabLite destined for Derbyshire – based Brid’s.

Across the UK, Charlton’s single – skinned steel SuperLite is now more popular than ever, as evidenced by SRC Aggregates of Essex bringing two to the Show with other examples coming from The Ardula Group of Maidstone, Manchester based PP O’Connor, GF Gordon (Plant Hire) of South Ockendon and Cook & Son of Gatwick.

Also from Charlton, and making a debut for an entirely new vehicle type for TIP-Ex, isa 6×2 rigid fitted with a dropside builder’s merchant body and crane, this truck soon to enter service with Parker Building Supplies of Polegate, East Sussex.

Yet more Thompsons Group products can be found being exhibited by various truck manufacturer and tipping equipment suppliers, these including Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Dennis Eagle (with a new low entry 8×4 tipper), Edbro and Binotto.

As Thompsons director Simon Shields says:

“TIP-Ex is the shop window for the whole industry, so we put our maximum effort into it. Every year, we think ‘beat that’ – but somehow, thanks to our customers and suppliers really wanting to work with us to show all their latest trucks, we always do.

This year, we have more to offer visitors than ever.”
