How to get lucky? Choose Thompsons, choose Volvo. Then finely tune…

Another four Thompsons – bodied eight wheelers have just joined the fleet of Kent – based Mark Luck Transport, bringing their total number of rigid tippers up to 45.

With every truck chassis in the fleet now carrying a steel Thompsons Loadmaster, the newest additions are all mounted on Volvo FMX chassis, three being standard 8x4s with the fourth a Tridem. To tweak their specifications a little further, two of the trucks feature day cabs, the other two being sleepers.

As company director Mark Luck explains

“What we want is the maximum possible operating versatility, but within strict vehicle parameters. For our rigid tippers, the body has to be a Loadmaster – we’ve bought Thompsons bodies and only Thompsons bodies now for years and years. For chassis, today we’re pretty much a Volvo fleet, because when you combine a Loadmaster with an FMX you really do have the ultimate in performance and rugged reliability.

As for the individual specifications, the Tridem is our second such example – chiefly thanks to its greatly improved manoeuvrability, which is a real bonus when working in congested urban environments. For our standard 8x4s we spec some of them with sleeper cabs, mainly for drivers working on night jobs where there can be a lot of waiting prior to tipping. What we’re really doing is fine – tuning the fully proven Thompsons / Volvo formula to give us the optimum vehicle for any individual application.”

Located just over the Dartford Crossing in Swanley, Mark Luck Transport provides a full range of tipper services to the building and construction industries, covering everything from muckaway and site clearance through to waste management and the supply of stone, recycled aggregates and topsoils. In recent years, the company has grown strongly, doubling its fleet size in the last decade and achieving significant recognition from both customers and the wider public at large.

“Part of our philosophy is to give our drivers the best trucks we can” adds Mark. “For example, all our recent Volvos have auto boxes and 500hp engines, making life that bit easier for the drivers whilst also giving us top class performance. Attracting and retaining staff is very important, especially as there are lots of other tipper operators in our area. Put simply, a Mark Luck truck has to be best!”

Founded way back in 1929 by Mark’s grandfather, the company has proven to be a true family success story. Kenny Luck, current co-director with his son Mark, has just celebrated his 70th birthday and can rest assured that the business is well – set for anything the future might bring.

Thompsons director Scott Burton says

“If any one company really represents the archetypal Thompsons customer, it’s probably Mark Luck. Family owned, fully committed, hard working and with a terrific track record they set an example for everyone in our industry. And, of course, they have been a stalwart user of Thompsons bodies for decades.

Ours has been a great partnership – and long may that continue.”
